Daytime break-ins in Western Massachusetts OTIS, M.A (NEWS10) - A rash of home break-ins in several western Massachusetts neighborhoods. News10s speaking with law enforcement on how they are asking the community to stay vigilant. Three police agencies in Berkshire and Hamden counties say five homes within a five-mile radius were broken into, in broad daylight.  “People are desperate, you know? Desperate times, desperate measures. And they’re taking it to the next level and breaking in during the day,” said Otis Police Department Sergeant, Tammy Weidhass. Law enforcement in Tolland, Otis and Sandisfield are working together to catch those responsible. Sgt Weidhaas says the break-ins occurred on the same day, last week.  Witnesses say all involved the same white box truck with orange markings. “Leading us to believe it was either a U-Haul or a Home Depot box truck. Avalanche’s Cale Makar named Norris Trophy finalist for third consecutive year Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar was voted a Norris Trophy finalist for the third consecutive year, the league announced Thursday.Makar joined San Jose’s Erik Karlsson and New York’s Adam Fox among finalists for the prize, which will be announced June 26 at the annual NHL Awards in Nashville. Makar has been a finalist in three of his four full seasons in NHL, and he won last season along with the Conn Smythe.Makar, 24, made the cut this year despite missing 22 regular-season games. He finished with 66 points in 60 games, making him second among NHL defensemen in points per game. Passenger who missed flight makes bomb threat, forces evacuation at LAX, police say A JetBlue flight from Las Vegas was evacuated after landing in Los Angeles on Thursday after reports of a suspicious package on board.At around 2 p.m. authorities said a disgruntled passenger who missed his flight made a statement saying his luggage “contained a possible bomb” aboard the aircraft.The JetBlue plane landed at Los Angeles International Airport and was moved to an isolated area. Thursday's tornado the 3rd to hit Los Angeles area in three months Cell phone cameras captured the latest severe weather event to hit the Los Angeles metro area when a weak tornado touched down in Carson and Compton Thursday morning.Drea Martinez shared video on social media of rotating clouds and flying debris over Compton when the tornado, which the National Weather Service classified as an EF0, hit the area of 169th and Walnut streets around 8:55 a.m.The twister caused minor damage to buildings and cars. There were no reports of injuries.NWS said the degree of damage suggests the tornado had winds around 75 mph. Doctor John Cheng was posthumously remembered and honored for helping stop a mass shooter at a Laguna Woods church last year. Davis stabbing suspect has Oakland ties DAVIS — A 21-year-old former UC Davis student arrested Wednesday for allegedly committing three stabbings, including two that were fatal, within the last week attended high school in Oakland, according to reports.At a press conference Thursday, Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said Carlos Dominguez was taken into custody after 15 people called in reports of a person who matched the description of the suspect in a local park.Pytel said Dominguez had a large knife in his backpack. He was wearing the same clothes described by witnesses who saw the third stabbing. Pytel says police believe Dominguez is responsible for all three stabbings.
