Kickin’ It with Kiz: Wouldn’t it be cool if NHL West is won in duel between Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid? The Avs have a better chance of making a deeper playoff run than the Nuggets. Even with the injury to captain Gabe Landeskog and the departure of Nazem Kadri, the core of this squad feels similar to last year’s team that won the Stanley Cup. Plus, the NBA West is such a gauntlet, it would be a surprise if the Nuggets got to the Western Conference finals.Victor, CU alumKiz: While the top-seeded Nuggets would be underdogs in a series against Phoenix or Golden State, there’s no team in the NHL West the Avs should fear (although the Los Angeles Kings would be a big, fat pain in the tushie). The staff here at Kickin’ Headquarters says: Let’s jump straight to the conference finals and a duel between Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid to determine the fastest gun in the West.I believe this is the season Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets finally get to the NBA Finals. If not, coach Michael Malone may not be back next year. It’s finals or bust.Aaron, DenverKiz: The ...

Chief assures residents there will be no gaps in service Despite shortages in personnel over the last several years – especially this year – Antioch Police Chief Steven Ford assured residents that all beats are covered and there are no gaps in service.Ford told the City Council and others that he has restructured operations, collapsing the swing shift to ensure “full city coverage in all beats and districts,” with officers continuing to work 12-hour shifts. There are seven officers and two supervisors every shift, he said.“To be clear, we are not in the dire straits that some may have thought,” Ford said at last week’s council meeting. “We have the adequate coverage that we need…We’re going to do the work and keep the city safe.”The chief, who was hired permanently last fall, gave his first full crime and staffing report on Tuesday – days after it was announced that some two dozen officers were found engaging in racist or homophobic texts.“We need to come together as a community,” he said. “And we all know we’re better, strong...

Knight scores 2 in US 9-1 rout of Czechs in world semis BRAMPTON, Ontario (AP) — Captain Hilary Knight, Amanda Kessel and Tessa Janecke each scored twice, and the United States secured its tournament-record 22nd berth in the women’s hockey world championship gold-medal game with a 9-1 rout of the Czech Republic on Saturday. The victory sets up another potential showdown against cross-border rival Canada in the championship game on Sunday. Canada, which eked out a 3-2 overtime win over Sweden in the quarterfinals, plays Switzerland in the other semifinal later in the day.Canada (5-0) finished atop the Group A standings following a 4-3 shootout win over the Americans on Monday. With nine titles to Canada’s 12, the U.S. (5-1) has never missed a gold-medal game in tournament history, and it will be seeking to reclaim the title after losing to Canada in each of the past two finals.Second-year coach John Wroblewski’s decision to retool an aging roster so far has paid off, with a mix of veterans — Knight and Kessel — and youngsters — Janeck...

Another record for Haaland, another loss for Lampard in EPL

Another record for Haaland, another loss for Lampard in EPL The records keep coming for Erling Haaland at Manchester City. The losses are mounting for Frank Lampard at Chelsea.City’s 3-1 win over Leicester on Saturday, which moved the defending champions three points behind Premier League leader Arsenal, was inevitably propelled by Haaland even though the prolific striker had just 45 minutes on the field.By the time he was substituted at halftime, the Norway international had scored twice — one from the penalty spot, another a clipped finish following Kevin De Bruyne’s through ball — to move to 32 league goals for the season. That left Haaland tied with Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah for the most goals in a 38-game Premier League season. Salah’s haul came in the 2017-18 campaign.Haaland will surely go beyond that, and also is on course to break the record for a 42-game campaign, which stands at 34 goals and is jointly held by Andy Cole (at Newcastle in 1993-94) and Alan Shearer (at Blackburn in ’94-95).John Stones was...

NFL players get chance to show media skills during workshop INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Jason Kelce has excelled as one of the NFL’s best offensive linemen for his ability to quickly adjust blocking schemes and make split-second decisions to ensure his quarterback has a clean pocket. The Philadelphia Eagles center has discovered that translating that to a television or radio audience is more challenging than it seems.Kelce was one of 25 current and former players who participated last week in the league’s Broadcasting and Media Workshop, which used to be known as the Broadcast Bootcamp. This was the 16th time the event was held. For the past two years, it has taken place at the NFL Media headquarters, which opened in 2021 and is a 30-yard pass from SoFi Stadium, the home of the Rams and Chargers. “This is all new territory for me. I have even more respect for it now,” Kelce said. “It’s very hard to do something live, reactive of stimulus that just happened and having something clever and meaningful to say.”The three-day session allows participant...

Elliott makes return at Martinsville after breaking leg MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — Chase Elliott makes his return to racing this weekend at Martinsville Speedway with one thing on his mind: Winning. And that approach won’t change the rest of the season.Elliott has missed the last six Cup Series races after breaking his leg during a freak snowboarding accident in Colorado, leaving him so far behind in the points race that his only realistic shot of making the NASCAR playoffs is winning a race.“We are in a position where we are going to have to win, or at least that is how I have been looking at it,” Elliott said. “You miss a few weeks and you’re pretty much going to have to win.”Elliott has been granted a waiver allowing him to compete for the Cup championship even though his injury did not occur on the track.Elliott said while the setup of his No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro and how he drives won’t change, the overall strategy of how his team approaches Sunday’s 400-lap race will be different.“We see guys shorten stages to try to get the...

Baldelli ejected, German stays in game after ump check NEW YORK (AP) — Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was ejected after an umpire checked Domingo Germán extensively following three perfect innings Saturday and allowed the New York Yankees pitcher to remain in the game.Germán was checked after the top of the third by crew chief James Hoye and again when he came onto the field during the top of the fourth. Yankees manager Aaron Boone and team translator Marlon Abreu joined the discussion, which led to a 5 1/2-minute gap between the end of the third and the start of the fourth. When Germán was allowed to go back to the mound, Baldelli came out of the dugout and pointed repeatedly as Hoye tossed the manager from the game.Twins bench coach Jayce Tingler took over as manager.Germán retired his first 15 batters, striking out 10. New York led 3-0 on home runs by Kyle Higashioka and Anthony Rizzo.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsSource
