St. Paul Mayor Carter: Brace for ‘one of the roughest pothole seasons that we’ve ever had’

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter told business leaders to brace for rough driving this spring — maybe even the worst road travel in recent memory.“Our potholes are talking to us right now,” said Carter, addressing members of the Greater St. Paul Building Owners and Managers Association in a conference room of the downtown DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on Monday afternoon. “We’ve had one of the roughest winters ever. We’re expecting probably one of the roughest pothole seasons that we’ve ever had.”It’s not just the capital city that is suffering from visibly pockmarked roads — potholes nearly as large as manhole covers have emerged across Minneapolis and the metro suburbs, as well — but the mayor’s recommended fix is one that will take buy-in from state lawmakers, a potential uphill climb considering competing priorities. The mayor’s administration has said that tripling St. Paul’s local sales tax to 1.5% could rai...Children’s Theatre Company artistic director Peter Brosius will leave the theater in 2024

Denver spent a good chunk of Monday adding offensive pieces to its roster. It also found time to retain one of its core defensive players. The Broncos agreed to a three-year contract with linebacker Alex Singleton, the team’s leading tackler in 2022, getting him back in the building and ensuring that his status as a free agent lasted only a matter of hours.Singleton’s deal is worth up to $18 million and comes with $9 million guaranteed, a source confirmed to The Post. The California native arrived in Denver a year ago on a one-year, minimum salary deal but established himself quickly as a viable option at linebacker and core special teams player, too. Both Josey Jewell (four games) and Jonas Griffith (foot) missed time over the course of the season, and Singleton turned himself into a virtually every-down player. He finished the season with 163 tackles, most by a Denver defender since 2007.At the NFL Combine, general manager George Paton said the franchise would “love...Broncos make offensive line overhaul priority No. 1 with free agent additions RT Mike McGlinchey, G Ben Powers

George Paton minced no words at the NFL Scouting Combine.“Obviously, we need to upgrade the offensive line,” the Broncos general manager told reporters in Indianapolis two weeks ago.So when the NFL’s two-day negotiating period opened Monday morning ahead of the official start to the new league year and free agency period Wednesday, Paton and Denver got right to work. The Broncos threw major resources into their offensive front line, agreeing to long-term contracts with former San Francisco right tackle Mike McGlinchey and former Baltimore guard Ben Powers, league sources confirmed to The Post.McGlinchey is receiving a five-year contract worth up to $87.5 million that comes with $50 million guaranteed, while Powers can earn up to $52 million over his four-year contract and gets $28.5 million guaranteed, sources told The Post. The salary cap ramifications were not immediately clear — Denver entered with more than $32 million in cap space for 2023, seventh-most in the NFL — but the...Some celebrities notably absent from the Oscars' In Memoriam tribute

It is typically the most somber part of the Academy Awards ceremony: the In Memoriam tribute to notable entertainers who have died over the past year.On Sunday night, John Travolta was visibly choked up as he walked on stage to the song "Hopelessly Devoted to You" by Olivia Newton-John, Travolta's "Grease" co-star who died of cancer in August 2022. "Since tonight is a celebration of the work and the accomplishments of our community in this past year, it is only fitting then that we celebrate those we’ve lost, who’ve dedicated their lives to their craft, both in front of and behind the camera, through their immeasurable contributions," a visibly emotional Travolta said. "Each of them left an individual and indelible mark, that shared and informed us, they’ve touched our hearts, they’ve made us smile, and became dear friends, who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to.” Photos from the 2023 Oscars: red carpet, ceremony, and more The spotlight then shined on Lenny Kravitz who pl...Hospital seeks public's help identifying female patient found in Los Angeles County

Published Fri, 01 Nov 2024 12:33:24 GMT
"Moral hazard" is a well-established economic concept that basically says if there are no consequences for bad corporate behavior, there's no incentive for companies to change their ways. That was the stink that followed the bailout of banks after the 2008 financial crisis. Once businesses become "too big to fail," they can pretty much do as they please, engaging in the same risky behavior. While the collapse of Silicon Valley and Signature banks is nowhere close to the severity of the earlier mess, it once again places us in the unfortunate position of the government stepping in to keep the peace and make depositors whole. Silicon Valley Bank seized by FDIC in largest bank failure since 2008 It could be argued that this outcome was all but assured in 2018 after then-President Donald Trump signed into law a bipartisan bill deregulating financial firms. Trump called this "a great day for America."It wasn't.What the 2018 regulatory rollback did was relieve financial firms of much of t...The Golden Virtue – Tanja Subotic’s Upcoming Stories Are A Conduit Of Divine Wisdom
