Efforts are underway to clean up our atmosphere, from high-powered EV chargers to carbon-neutral aviation fuel. Scientists in Chicago area are focused on decarbonizing our planet and they’re working at unprecedented speeds.Energy is the focus at Argonne National Laboratory in DuPage County.Seth Darling, Ph.D is Argonne National Laboratory’s Chief Science and Technology Officer.“A little more than half of the greenhouse gas emissions that come from transportation are from cars and other light duty vehicles,” he said. ”The easiest way to decarbonize that part of the transportation sector is electrification, going to electric vehicles. We are having to do something we have never done before in terms of the pace of change.”Darling is one of our country’s premier energy experts.“There’s more solar energy coming down to earth than we’ll ever need as a society,” he saidDarling, along with a battery of scientists, are working at lightning speed to decarbonize our planet.“The timescale here ...Chicago non-profit backs House bill aiming to fund housing for homeless with chronic illness

Johnny Pitts has been receiving help from the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) for about five years, saying the organization is what helped get him back on his feet."Before I got into AFC, I was hopeless, had no where to stay [and] was going from house-to-house," Pitts said. "It’s hard to be out here by yourself [and] having somewhere to stay [that] gives you better peace of mind."The AFC has been in operation for more than three decades and helps those battling homelessness while living with HIV and other chronic illnesses."There is a great need for housing in Chicagoland for people living with HIV," said Brandi Calvert, Vice President of the AFC.What Calvert also said is that the need for housing is much greater than the current funding available."In the time the AFC has maintained a housing list, it was like one or two, maybe ten people about three or four years ago," Calvert said. "And now it’s up over 1200. That demonstrates the amount of need [in Chicagoland]." ‘She lived he...Man shot and killed outside Chicago violence reduction non-profit

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A car crashed into Monique Brewster’s home on April 27, which she said marked the seventh time a collision of this type has happened. When comparing pictures of the home when she bought it nearly four years ago to now, seemingly the only aspect that has not changed is its location. The house, with a view of the McCullough Mountain Range, once sported automatic driveway gates to protect her vintage cars, a foyer overlooking the mountains, and a water fountain.“It was paradise, you know?” Brewster said, looking disappointedly towards her front yard Wednesday morning. Now, the driveway gates sit immobile off its cracked track, the foyer walls lay on the floor and the water fountain is destroyed. A black Tesla, she said, is just the most recent vehicle to collide with her property, despite the giant boulders she added around it. “Even before I could see anything, the wall was coming in, and my China cabinet and the things I have in my hou...One seriously injured after rollover in southeast Travis County

Minnesota United will forgo the style points at this stage of the 2023 season. The key thing Wednesday was the Loons ended a six-match winless streak with a 1-0 win over Houston Dynamo at Allianz Field. The Loons took the first half but it should have been more. But given how MNUFC had been shut out in three of its last four matches, they will take what they can get.In the 14th minute, United’s press forced a Houston turnover, and Bongi Hlongwane took advantage of the gift with a toe-poke goal for his team-leading third goal of the season. After Ibrahim Aliyu’s shot went off the corner of the goalposts in the 22nd minute and Dayne St. Clair was needed for a sweeper-keeper moment 40 yards away from goal, the Loons had three golden scoring chances.Steve Clark denied them all. First it was a double save of Franco Fragapane and Hlongwane in the 43rd minute and Luis Amarilla’s header in the 45th minute.Clark was there again with a shoulder save to deny Fragapane early in the second half.Th...Girls state badminton: Edina breaks through for first state title

Claire Watz has competed in state tournaments in other activities. But the Edina High School sophomore never came away satisfied with her own performance.“I always seemed to lose under pressure,” she said. That certainly wasn’t the case Wednesday during the state badminton team tournament, played on her home court at Edina High School.Watz’s two wins at No. 4 singles proved decisive in both the Hornets’ 4-3 upset over seven-time defending champion Johnson in the semifinals and their 4-3 victory over Burnsville in the state title match.“In other activities, it seems like we’ve gotten to state and haven’t come through,” said Watz, who also participates in speech, debate and mock trial. “But today we did and I couldn’t be happier.“It feels unbelievable right now.”It was the first state badminton title for Edina and the 199th state team title at the school overall. LOS ANGELES — Nick Gordon fouled a ball off his right shin and crumpled to the dirt in pain. Four innings later, Joey Gallo did the same.Gallo was still dealing with considerable swelling after the game, but he avoided a fracture. Gordon wasn’t quite as lucky. The Twins’ utilityman suffered a fractured shin, manager Rocco Baldelli said, and is expected to miss considerable playing time.To top things off, second baseman Jorge Polanco also left early, straining his hamstring while running to first on a groundball in the fourth inning of what for the Twins became a quite painful 7-3 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon. That makes Thursday’s off day in Southern California particularly well-timed as the Twins assess the injuries and sift through potential roster replacements.Polanco said after the game that his hamstring felt tight, but he and the team would see how it feels on Friday and go from there.“What happened to me last year (with injuries), it made me more aware,” P...Latest news
