Who's responsible if an autonomous vehicle causes a crash?

Who's responsible if an autonomous vehicle causes a crash? AUSTIN (KXAN) -- As Austin grows in population, so, too has its appeal to driverless vehicle technology. General Motors' Cruise, Volkswagen and Waymo are just some of the companies that have set up shop testing autonomous vehicles in the Texas capital, with its transportation network and high pedestrian traffic noted as some of the reasons behind the appeal. But with more vehicles sans drivers on Austin roadways, it begs the question: What happens if an autonomous vehicle causes a crash?Austin-based law firm Byrd Davis Alden & Henrichson, LLP said the evolution of driver-free technology means litigation surrounding crash claims has evolved as well. Traditionally, a car crash caused by human error allows the victim to pursue a claim based on the driver's negligence, per the law firm's analysis. Most auto accident claims filed in Texas are done so under this stipulation, the firm added. In the case of self-driving cars, that fault could fall into the hands of the vehicle's manufactu...

James Lewis, the sole suspect in the 1982 Tylenol murders, has died Christy Gutowski, Stacy St. Clair | Chicago Tribune (TNS)James Lewis, the lone suspect in the 1982 Tylenol murders, was found dead Sunday at his home in suburban Boston, multiple law-enforcement sources confirmed to the Tribune. His death comes after 40 years of intense scrutiny from law enforcement, in which Lewis played a cat-and-mouse game with investigators. Local authorities questioned him as recently as September as part of a renewed effort to bring charges in the case. With the investigation’s only suspect dead, it now seems unlikely that charges will ever be brought in poisonings that killed seven people and caused a worldwide panic.“I was always hoping justice would be served, and this short-circuits it,” said former FBI special agent Roy Lane, who worked the case for decades.Former assistant U.S. attorney Jeremy Margolis, who successfully prosecuted Lewis for an attempted extortion related to the case, also expressed regret that Lewis was never held accountable for the murde...

Saunders vs. Newman: Will Rockies lose 100 games this season? Does it matter?

Saunders vs. Newman: Will Rockies lose 100 games this season? Does it matter? At the all-star break, the Rockies are 34-57 and on pace to finish 61-101. Denver Post beat writers Patrick Saunders and Kyle Newman debate the importance of Colorado’s historically bad trajectory.Saunders: As you might guess, the idea of a 100-loss season is not a popular topic in the Rockies clubhouse. As someone said to me over the weekend in San Francisco, “Why do you keep writing that we’re on track for 100 losses? Do you really have to do that?” Well, given that the Rockies have never hit that dubious milestone, I think it’s newsworthy to track. And I don’t think it’s “piling on.” I see it as a measure of the state of the franchise. But I ask you Mr. Newman, will the Rockies lose 100 games for the first time? Does it matter if they do?Newman: Yes, this team will not only hit 100 losses — with easily the most depleted rotation in the National League, they might make a run at 105. Achieving franchise infamy will matter,...
