NEW YORK (AP) — In 2022, doctors recorded the first confirmed case of tick-borne encephalitis virus acquired in the United Kingdom. It began with a bike ride.A 50-year-old man was mountain biking in the North Yorkshire Moors, a national park in England known for its vast expanses of woodland and purple heather. At some point on his ride, at least one black-legged tick burrowed into his skin. Five days later, the mountain biker developed symptoms commonly associated with a viral infection — fatigue, muscle pain, fever. At first, he seemed to be on the mend, but about a week later, he started to lose coordination. An MRI scan revealed he had developed encephalitis, or swelling of the brain. He had been infected with tick-borne encephalitis, or TBE, a potentially deadly disease that experts say is spreading into new regions due in large part to global warming.___EDITOR’S NOTE: This story is part of a collaboration between The Associated Press and Grist exploring the intersectio...Howie Carr: Bad week for Biden Inc.

With all of Hunter Biden’s problems with the law, it’s been a very bad week for Dementia Joe.But on Tuesday the president announced one incredible triumph that had gone completely unnoticed until now.“We ended cancer as we know it.”That’s an exact quote, by the way. Here’s the entire context, from a press briefing at the White House. Dementia Joe explained how he gets asked questions, like this one.“If you could do anything at all Joe what you do? I said I’d cure cancer. And they looked at me like, ‘Why cancer?’ Because no one thinks we can, that’s why. And we can. We ended cancer as we know it.”Amazing! Who knew?Sadly, the official White House transcript misquoted the Big Guy. Joe’s caregivers took his actual words, “We ended cancer as we know it,” and falsely changed them to something he did not say: “We can end cancer as we know it.”This was at the same press briefing where Brandon announced yet another downward revision in the nation’s phony-baloney COVID death statistics. Legendary players deserve a place in the HallOceanside, L.I.: To Voicer Vinny Armiento, who wonders why the Yankees never had a day to honor Graig Nettles: I totally agree with you. He was possibly the best third baseman in Yankee history, drug cheat Alex Rodriguez included. But I’ll tell you why they never honored him: Because he wasn’t afraid to hide his disdain for George Steinbrenner. So, George refused to retire his number and give him his day (Number 9 was retired for Roger Maris). Check out the end of the Yankees win over Boston in the Bucky Dent game. Nettles makes the catch, and after celebrating with his teammates on the field, he runs right past George — who clearly wanted his attention — into the dugout. That was no accident.Meanwhile, although I find Fred McGriff deserving of the Hall of Fame honor, it bothers me to no end that Don Mattingly can’t get in because he supposedly didn’t have enough good years. FOXBORO — Josh Uche understands the game outside the game.Whether he plays in New England past this season, a contract year for the talented 24-year-old pass rusher, is closely tied to his performance on the football field. But not entirely. The Patriots’ ongoing negotiations with his agents will be impacted by several factors: his contract demands, the team’s interest, how pass rushers of his age and caliber are being paid across the league, salary cap projections, the opportunity cost of signing Uche to a large contract for the team, potential replacements for him on the roster, how the front office projects he’ll play in upcoming years, what Uche believes he’ll do and which side can best flexSo, with all of that in mind, Uche is choosing to keep a clear head. The business game? His agents can handle that. Football is the only game he wants to play.“I just let (my agents) handle all the little stuff and just come out here and work each day,” Uche...Latest news
