Dear Amy: When I was a child, my mother was abusive. She’d threaten to send me away (I’m adopted, and therefore I believed her); she’d slap me across the face or hit me with a wooden spoon in a rage, and she constantly gave me the silent treatment — without explanation — sometimes for days.I don’t think my younger brother (who really misbehaved, and yet could do no wrong) got any of that.It wasn’t horrific child abuse — there were no physical scars — but it shaped me and I’m still angry about it.I am now 50, and she’s 75.We get along OK, although I still walk on eggshells around her.I tried to talk about it with her one time, a few years back. She got angry, said I was exaggerating, and then blamed me for whatever had happened: “You were miserable to be around, you know.”She said that I am “living in the past” and that it’s not healthy. Is she right?I just want to make it clear that what happened wasn’t OK — and that these things that happened were not in my imaginat...Commissioner Hoekstra in Kenya for international climate talks with national representatives and civil society ahead of COP28

Stroud threw a game-winning touchdown pass with 6 seconds remaining on a play the Houston Texans shouldn’t have had time to make. They had an opportunity for another play because Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles elected to use his final timeout instead of allowing a 10-second runoff after Mike Evans recovered a fumble at the Texans 14 with 49 seconds left. Baker Mayfield threw a go-ahead TD pass on the next play to give Tampa Bay a 37-33 lead. That left Stroud 46 seconds — instead of 36 — to go 75 yards with two timeouts. The sensational rookie quarterback needed every bit of it on Sunday. After completing two passes to Dalton Schultz for 20 yards and using both timeouts, Stroud hit Noah Brown for a 14-yard gain and then spiked the ball to stop the clock. He connected with Tank Dell for 26 yards to set Houston up at the Buccaneers 15 with 10 seconds to go.Stroud then found...AP Top 25 Reality Check: USCs fall a rarity in a season where most of the ranked have stayed ranked

With about a month left before bowl season, the AP Top 25 looks an awful lot like it did in the preseason. Not just at the top, where No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Michigan have not budged. After Southern California and Kansas State dropped out of the rankings Sunday, 18 of the teams ranked in the latest Associated Press college football poll were also ranked in the preseason. If chalk continues to prevail, Top 25 turnover would be unusually low this season. Typically, about 10 or 11 teams that start the season ranked fail to end it that way.The last two seasons were also outliers, but for the opposite reason.Fourteen teams that started the 2021 season ranked ended it unranked. That tied a record. Then last year, the record was broken when 15 preseason ranked teams finished unranked.Among the seven preseason ranked teams currently out of the rankings, it’s safe to say TCU (4-5 after being preseason No. 17) is not getting back in. Wisconsin (5-4, preseason 19) and Texas A&M (5-4, p...Latest news
