US inflation has steadily cooled. Getting it down to the Fed’s target rate will be the toughest mile.

US inflation has steadily cooled. Getting it down to the Fed’s target rate will be the toughest mile. WASHINGTON — Over the past year, inflation in the United States has tumbled from 9% all the way to 3%, softening most of the price pressures that have gripped the nation for more than two years. Now comes the hard part.Squeezing out the last bit of excess inflation and reducing it to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target rate is expected to be a much harder and slower grind.A measure called “core” inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is even higher than overall inflation. It, too, seems likely to slow only gradually. The Fed pays particular attention to core prices as a signal of where inflation might be headed. In June, core prices were up 4.1% from a year earlier, according to the Fed’s preferred gauge.“We see some challenges in getting that all the way back to 2% quickly,” said Michael Hanson, senior global economist at J.P. Morgan. The stickiness of inflation could endanger the possibility that the Fed will achieve a rare “soft landing” — a scenario in which it man...

How Mark McGwire's hitting lessons helped a Cardinals closer to All-Star form

How Mark McGwire's hitting lessons helped a Cardinals closer to All-Star form ST. LOUIS - Mark McGwire, once one of the most revered sluggers in all of baseball, helped many St. Louis Cardinals teammates with hitting as he chased home run history. But it's his work with one former All-Star pitcher that's recently caught attention. After he retired in 2001, McGwire acknowledged he used PEDs throughout his career, but he apologized and wanted to come clean with a second life in baseball. McGwire joined the St. Louis Cardinals' coaching staff from 2010-2012, developing relationships with players that eventually fostered a World Series Championship in 2011. The Cardinals averaged around five runs per game each season and improved in run production in each of their three years with McGwire coaching, so clearly something clicked. Peach cobbler as you’ve never seen it

Peach cobbler as you’ve never seen it Whether it’s a fancy apple tarte Tatin, a robust pineapple-ringed upside-down cake or a saucy flan, there’s something thrilling and suspenseful about turning your homemade dessert on its head.Any of these acrobatic dishes would taste fine served right-side up from the pan. But it’s that stunning reveal that adds a little drama and puts the fruit right on top, where it can shine. That’s the inspiration behind this upside-down peach cobbler. In traditional peach cobbler, you mix peaches with sugar and sometimes butter, hide them with rounds of biscuit dough, and bake. Spooned out of the baking dish and served in bowls, the cobbler’s modest simplicity is part of its charm. But, however delicious this might be, it doesn’t do much to show off the peaches.Throw in a gilding of caramel and an elegant flip, though, and you’ve got a confection to win oohs and aahs. Most of the effort of this recipe goes into simmering the caramel, which is what makes this truly special. Caramelizing sugar deepe...
